Want to have a large-fruited disease-resistant strawberry on the plot? Then get acquainted: Strawberry Mashenka. Bred more than half a century ago by Soviet breeders, the early ripe variety Moscow Jubilee, also called Mashenka, is still very popular among domestic and foreign gardeners for its classic flavor, excellent fruit taste, large size and high resistance to disease.

Grade description

The largest fruits of Mashenka are of the first order. Their weight can reach up to 100 g! And there is no large-fruited gene in Mashenka. The impressive size is due to the adjacent growth of several flowers, that is, several fruits are combined into one. A the norm for this variety is the mass of fruits from 30 to 40 g. Small berries on it are practically absent.

Strawberry berries of a beautiful burgundy-scarlet color. The shape of the first berries is comb-shaped, slightly flattened. Commodity properties are high. Thanks to the dense pulp, the crop is well stored and transported.

The bush is large, but neat, compact. The leaves are large, bright green, on strong cuttings, directed upward. Therefore, the spreading of the bush is average.

A feature of the variety is cultivation exclusively on the site. For cultivation on the balcony, the windowsill, the culture is unsuitable.

The undeniable advantages of the variety are high productivity, rapid reproduction and resistance to disease. The disadvantages include sensitivity to low temperatures and the scorching sun. Dark burn spots form on the leaves from the sun.

The description of the variety will be incomplete, if you do not mention the excellent taste of strawberries. Therefore, they love it so much and continue to cultivate it in areas, despite the huge number of new varieties.

Getting varietal planting material

Strawberry Mashenka propagates with mustache and seeds. Buying planting material is more reliable in specialized nurseries and stores. But market traders seedlings need to be treated with caution. Who will guarantee that the proposed seedlings are really varietal?

If this crop is already present on the site, then clone selection is recommended. It allows you to:

  • improve the quality of culture;
  • increase productivity.

It is necessary to choose the most productive healthy bushes on which the number of fruits exceeds the number of mustaches. For each strong mustache, the first outlet is marked and twisted a little to take root, and the continuation of the mustache is cut off. After 2 weeks, the outlet will become a full planting material.

A more laborious way is seed propagation. However, it is from the seeds that healthy and high-quality plants with pronounced varietal characteristics are obtained.

In early spring, seeds are sown in prepared containers filled with equal parts of garden soil, vermiculite and peat. Then slightly moisten the plantings and cover with a film. Capacities are put in a bright place. Air temperature should be room temperature. After 8-12 days, the first sprouts will appear, but it’s better to shoot the film after the seedlings have grown. When the plants reach 10-12 cm and they form 5-7 true leaves, they are planted in open ground.

The survival rate of strawberries Masha is high.

The variety is unpretentious, but certain agricultural practices help to increase the yield of berries.

Features landing and care

Variety Mashenka does not tolerate low temperatures, therefore, young plants should be planted in May or August. With every year, large-fruited garden strawberries can decrease. In order to maintain productivity, the soil before planting needs to be well prepared, and then competent care for the garden is necessary.

The best solution is to choose a flat area or with a slight slope to the west or south-west. But the lowlands, steep slopes, as well as slopes facing the south, are not suitable for growing Mashenka.

2 weeks before planting, the selected site should be treated with insecticides from beetle larvae. Variety Mashenka loves light, breathable soils, so for every square meter of beds you need to make 10-15 kg of humus and 5 kg of sand and dig the ground. If an ordinary method is chosen for planting, the row spacing should be 50-60 cm.

For planting strawberries, it is better to choose a cloudy day. Seedlings are planted in holes watered with water at a distance of 45-50 cm. When planting, you need to monitor the roots so that they do not bend up, and for the growth bud - it should be on the ground surface. The earth around the bushes is compacted and watered. Generous watering eliminates the air voids around the roots and contributes to the speedy survival of seedlings.

The soil around the plants can be mulched with straw or peat.

In the aisles, many gardeners plant garlic. Garden strawberries and garlic get along well with each other, and garlic repels strawberry pests.

Regular watering (preferably in the morning), weeding and loosening of the soil favorably affect the growth and yield of the crop. If the roots of the bushes are exposed, they need to be sprinkled with earth. Mustache should be cropped.

The plant needs fertilizing, especially during the growth period. At the end of March, nitrogen and organic fertilizers are introduced. At the end of April, you need to feed strawberries with phosphorus-potash or organic fertilizer. And before flowering, she needs organic fertilizer.

It is not difficult to take care of strawberries, and the result will delight you with a rich harvest of delicious berries.
